Why blog - That's a darn good question...
First - when you get to be my age and have 3 grandchildren, and it occurs to you that you know almost nothing about your own grandparents (mine all passed away before I was born), you start thinking about creating some type of 'record' that will (with luck) paint a picture of who you are (as disturbing as that may be). A blog seems to be as good of a vehicle for that as anything else.
Second - I can remember a LOT from before I was 3 years old. And not just events but also thought processes, emotions and observations. Apparently that's highly unusual. I intend to blog about it - some might find it interesting.
Third - Writing for a human audience is hard for me. (I spend an inordinate amount of time 'wordsmithing' everything - as a matter of fact I've already reworded this sentence 10 times.) Note that I have written huge amounts of computer software - I know exactly what to say, how to say it and how the computer is going to interpret it - it's effortless. And law school wasn't an issue because writing exam answers is a 'mechanical' process. You just follow IRAC (Issue, Rule, Analysis, Conclusion), regurgitate a bunch of of key words and phrases and say 'because' a lot... (Professors actually encourage this because it's easy to grade.) But I digress... The point is that trying to communicate my thoughts and emotions is a real struggle for me. I hope it gets easier as the blog evolves.
And finally, I find myself really amusing (especially when nobody else does). Like whenever I see a dachshund I say "Hey! Why the long face?" and when we have cake I always ask for a corner piece even when the cake is round.
I could give more examples, but I think it's clear that the world shouldn't be deprived of such brilliant wit :-)
Now here's one final (really bad) pun. Warning - I've moved it to the end because it's about my sister's suicide. So, if you're one of those 'humor impaired' types who think it's not okay to laugh about the suicide of a close family member stop right here.
It's in my blog because it's who I am. I've always used humor to cope with tragedy and that partly explains why I'm still around and my sister isn't. And let me assure you - she would have thought this was hilarious. So, here goes:
After my sister's death her husband mentioned that the VA had provided a free flag for the memorial service. My response:
Well, that explains it...
She never could pass up a "die now get one free" offer...
Don't say I didn't warn you...
