Odds and Ends

I'm going to take a short break from telling 'the story' and toss out a few tidbits I've run across while poking around recently.

The first one is just too funny:
Today I discovered a web page selling "pre-dynastic Egyptian healing rods". According to this web page there had been a 17 generation injunction against the teaching of pre-dynastic Egyptian healing secrets, and the injunction was lifted by (sic) "Rumanian Countess Olga Marie von Lasko" when the 'vibrations of the planets' became high enough.
I haven't mentioned this yet, but my mother (Olgamaria) had a second husband named "von Lasko" and she often used that name when doing psychic readings (it sounded cool). She also claimed to be Romanian (she was born in Transylvania) and a countess (she was one briefly by marriage). So this is obviously a reference to her.
Now, as I mentioned before, my mom could spin an amazing story, and she often talked about the 'vibrations of the planets', but this is a bit out there even for her :-) Unbelievable... The ghost of my mother lives on :-)

Second:
In my blog entry titled 'long division' I mentioned being an honor student in the 5th grade at Waldron Academy. Well, today I was poking through my files and I actually found the proof, signed by none other than 'Sister Mary Patrice' herself:

Yes - I know this is the first time I've published my name. I figure most everyone reading this knows it already, and if they don't it's really not that hard to figure it out...
And about that 'deportment' thing (bottom line on the card) - it's not something that I came by naturally. Those nuns just scared the bejeezus out of me. To this day whenever I see a woman near a door I run and open it. (You don't want to know what happened if you didn't open a door for a nun).

Next - I found some early pictures of my mother:

The picture on the left was taken when she was teenager. I know her name is on the picture and it's definitely a bad idea to put your mother's maiden name on the web, but I don't think you can possibly get it from the signature. Here's a hint: It's not "Vifufefna" :-)

You can't tell from these photos, but she had dark red hair and hazel eyes that turned mostly yellow when she was really angry. It was as freaky as it was frightening.

The picture on the right is (I think) from her first communion (it's a Catholic thing). It's the only childhood picture I have of her...

I also came across the photo below - yeah, that's me. I remember when it was taken all too well - my father had bought a new 57 Chevy BelAir and he plopped me down on the hood for a photo-op.

Now you may think I'm hollering because of that outfit my mother had me wearing. (What was she thinking???) But that wasn't it at all.

Here's a bit of advice is for all you parents with small children: If you put your 3 year old down on the hood of a car ... and he starts hollering ... and you can't figure out why ... don't just stand there taking pictures:

Check the temperature of the hood!!!!

Oh no! Do you still have scars on your bum?
Your mother is gorgeous. And is that really HER referred to on the webpage? That is too strange. Keep these tales coming!

You know, I distinctly remember wanting to tell my dad that the hood was hot but I just couldn't make any words come out :-)

And yes, there is no doubt in my mind that the web page was talking about my mother.
I'm sure that whoever is selling the 'healing rods' has massaged the story quite a bit, but that business about ancient healing secrets and planetary vibrations was undoubtedly her. (Like I said, her entire life was a performance piece'.)

I'll get around to doing an entry on her 'spiritual teachings' eventually.

Okay, pdx70rt, you've had a break. It's been three days since the last story. Come on now. I want another. NOW.
